SIMON ESTES Baryton basse/ Bass baritone

(1938 - ) Simon Estes est né le 2 Fevrier 1938 à Centerville, Iowa. Son père était mineur de fond. Il reçut une éducation religieuse, lui, son frère et ses soeurs. Il était soprano masculin dans l'église baptiste locale. Sa voix n'a pas mué avant sa majorité, et pendant environ 3 ans, ses capacités vocales restèrent limitées. Il chanta tout de même, comme tenor, dans les choeurs de l'université de l'Iowa. Là bas, il commença ses études de chant avec Charles Kellis, qui le requalifia en baryton-basse, et lui enseigna la technique vocale, la diction et l'interprétation. Kellis l'immergea aussi dans le monde de l'opera grâce à des enregistrements d'artistes tels que Leontyne Price. Simon Estes fut admis à la Julliard School en 1964. Il fit ses débuts professionnels en 1965, dans le rôle de Ramfis, au Deutsche Oper de Berlin. En 1966, il reçut la médaille de bronze au concours Tchaikowski de Moscou. En 1978, il fut le premier artiste masculin noir américain à chanter un rôle majeur à Bayreuth : ce fut le Hollandais, qu'il considère comme son meilleur rôle, mais aussi le plus exigeant. Pendant quelques temps, il s'est consacré essentiellement au Lieders, reduisant ses apparitions à l'opera. SimonEstes pense que c'est la raison première de la chaleur et la musicalité de sa voix. Il a fait ses débuts au Met en janvier 1982, dans le rôle du Landgrave de Tannhauser. Il se produit depuis lors dans tous les théatres et salles de concert du monde. Parmi ses performances, il chanta Amonasro (dans Aida) au cours du concert d'adieux de Leontyne Price au Met en 1985. Il enseigne également à la Julliard School. Simon Estes dispose d'une voix puissante, avec un timbre naturellement chaud et velouté, qui convient idéalement aux rôles Wagnériens.

(1938 - ) Simon Estes was born in Centerville, Iowa, on February 2, 1938. His father was a coal miner. He, his brother, and two sisters were given a religious upbringing. Estes was a boy soprano in a local Baptist church. His voice did not change until his senior year in high school, and for about three years, his vocal ability was limited. He did, however, sing tenor in the chorus at the University of Iowa. While there, he began study with Charles Kellis, who reclassified Estes as a bass-baritone and taught him vocal technique, diction and interpretation. Kellis also was responsible for exposing Estes to opera through recordings of artists such as Leontyne Price. Estes was admitted to Juilliard in 1964 to continue his studies. He later received a grant to study abroad where, in 1965, he made his professional debut as Ramfis in Aida at the Deutsche Oper in Berlin. In 1966, he received the bronze medal at the Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow. In 1978, Estes became the first male African-American to sing a major role on the stage at Bayreuth. He sang the title role in Der fliegende Hollander, which he considers his best, if most demanding, role. For a time, he did mostly lieder recitals and opera performances on a more limited basis. Estes credited that as a primary reason for the warmth and musicality of his voice. Estes made his Metropolitan Opera debut on January 4, 1982, as the Landgrave in Wagner's Tannhauser. He preformed internationally both on the operatic and concert stages. Among his many achievements, he sang the role of Amonasro in Leontyne Price's finale at the Met in 1985. He also has joined the faculty at Juilliard. Estes has a big voice with a natural, warm texture. He is a bass-baritone whose velvety tone adds a unique touch to the Wagnerian roles he sings.
